Jennifer Jones
01:09:05
I used the MIBI for my own understanding, and the MIBI-t for exploring adolescent Af-Am girls age 13-15
Matt Bear-Fowler
01:12:16
What's the MIBI?
Jennifer Jones
01:18:03
As an Af-Am, I never considered how the other models differ from Black identity model. Very interesting.
Matt Bear-Fowler
01:18:25
Kind of wish you'd talk about Native American identity development.
Jennifer Jones
01:19:12

At what ages are these developmentally typical/appropriate? I know it’s a really personal journey and each stage happens at different times and you can go back, but at what age do kids have the cognitive ability to understand them? (Like at what age can a child understand structural racism and power?
Renee Ramey
01:25:24
That is SO awesome! Thank you I really appreciate all of this.
Beth Wheeler
01:25:43
don’t forget native american
Crystal Ringer
01:26:58
There was an Indigenous identity in the prework, I thought it would be covered here as well
Jennifer Jones
01:27:06
My 4 YO grandson “sees” and “knows” that there are white people and Black people “there’s a white person in the picture” but doesn’t know what the implications are yet. I remember distinctly when his mom first realized the impact of being a Black teenager at the mall when she was stereotyped at the cash register.
Matt Bear-Fowler
01:27:50
Yeah, I'm really disappointed for indigenous people to be left out.
Ronke Tapp
01:28:57
Stephen Quintana has a model for how children gain understanding of race and ethnicity, based on their cognitive, perceptual, and affective development levels.

Also, how to help kids who have a different racial identity than the parents.
Lucretia Berry
01:34:51
I’m smiling really hard at this point!!!!
Emily Higgins
01:35:58
When do you think it’s appropriate to talk about bias, discrimination, and specifically power?
Anne Sibley O'Brien
01:40:01
One of the distinctions I think is essential about racial identity development is the difference between minority experience (racial difference is highlighted & often becomes a significant & defining part of identity) and majority experience (normative; therefore racial identity becomes invisible, taken for granted, often not significant piece of identity)
Nora Yasumura
