01:29:32

01:31:01
valerie, you might want to go on mute? getting a bit of feedback

01:31:59
love!! <3

01:32:12

01:34:02

01:34:39
Transferring IN URI. wow.

01:37:21
That was amazing!!

01:38:17
I agree Megan, intake and lifesaving went up along with welfare. You CAN have your cake and eat it too.

01:42:20
i think she meant us?

01:43:23
From Kelly Cunningham to All Panelists: 03:29 PMI volunteered at my local shelter in Vermont and our project was portal install. It was awesome - fun and super rewarding.

01:43:43
It’s a brilliant low-cost solution for converting traditional kennels that were created for dogs. I’m excited to get some shelters on board doing this and hopefully pooling the cost on the plasma cutter. Y’all are awesome!!

01:43:56
still just going to us, valerie. post again?

01:44:22
yes, you can unmute when you're ready

01:44:44
use q&a from reg form if needed

01:45:34
love the idea of sharing the cutter, Megan! Don't forget to tell them to enter the Portal It Forward contest happening

01:45:52
OH I didn’t see that - thanks for letting me know

01:46:11
Very cool! :)

01:46:18
Given the choice to portal vertically or horizontally is there a preferred method? Why? Or both?

01:46:51
Our banks of cages are portalized both! We can open the cages side by side as well as to the cages on the bottom!

01:46:56
From chumkee aziz to All Panelists: 03:32 PMDebbie, you and your team did all the hard work :) !From pamela McNeeley to All Panelists: 03:32 PMIs this presentation going to be available later??

01:47:45
Yes, this webinar has been recorded and will be available tonight at https://www.aspcapro.org/webinar/20180222/cat-portals-tale-two-shelters

01:47:48
Might be able to partner with a local tooling company that has a plasma cutter -- maybe create sponsorship opportunity for local business -- they can loan tool & maybe operator in exchange for free advertising at shelter, on website, events and such.

01:48:33
I think I saw a typo on and earlier slide - "would increase euthanasia" should be "would not increase euthanasia." Can you check on that?

01:48:57
She did say that she promised to NOT increase euthansia rates. I believe the word was just missing on the slide

01:49:14
Have any of you used a nibbler tool instead of a plasma cutter? I know the nibbler is less expensive

01:49:55
What influenced the idea to make portals in the first place? Where did the inspiration come from?

01:50:22
During busy season, do you ever revert back to using the smaller kennels (can the portals be locked?)

01:50:58
James, YES, you an use a nibbler, check out the previous webinar to see a nibbler in action. To see detailed instruction on how to use a nibbler, go to our website: https://www.sheltermedicine.com/library/resources/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search%5Bslug%5D=using-a-nibbler-to-cut-cage-walls-for-portal-installation

01:51:37
From pamela McNeeley to All Panelists: 03:37 PMWhat about shelters in LA which are FULL to capacity? Cats are getting sick and they don't have room to double their cage size?

01:52:02
Transport the healthy ones to us in NH! :)

01:52:55
From pamela McNeeley to All Panelists: 03:38 PMAlysha Boisv - contact me - we can!!on Facebook.

01:52:55
Is illness declining due to less stress for the cats?

01:53:21
Is there a shortage of cats in NH??? GA can help you with that. Anymore, kitten season is year round here & expecting lots this year.

01:53:22
Will do Pamela! Thank you

01:53:26
From pamela McNeeley to All Panelists: 03:39 PMMegan- that is what the panelists said.

01:53:38
From Alysha Boisvert to Everyone: 03:39 PMWill do Pamela! Thank you

01:53:39
Pamela, there are several shelters in LA that have taken the portal plunge and found out their live release has gone UP. Check in out at South L.A. city and the Lancaster shelter in L.A. County. By keeping cats healthy and less stressed, they stay less than half the time, so you can move more through with less than half the space. It does seem like magic.

01:53:50
From Dr. Kate Hurley to All Panelists: 03:39 PMPamela, there are several shelters in LA that have taken the portal plunge and found out their live release has gone UP. 01:54:14
I’d assume technically you get more square footage for cats this way

01:54:44
Square footage is also increased with vertical surfaces.

01:54:47

01:55:10
From Ana Sanchez to All Panelists: 03:41 PMHow does this work when socialization is needed?

01:55:45
aboisvert@sarlnh.org, thank you guys!

01:55:50
From pamela McNeeley to All Panelists: 03:41 PMAlysha- I'm at CatAngelNetwork@gmail.com

01:56:54
From Amanda Coburn to All Panelists: 03:42 PMDo either of your shelters relocate cats within the building, i.e. from within a holding area to an adoption area when they become available? We are still doing this automatically -- very few cats move straight up for adoption in the lobby because there just isn't room. Does the move from the "back" to the "front" become less stressful when they have portals in both places?

02:00:09
AMANDA COBURN your question may be answered generally but you might also want to check out this quickie presentation on "open selection" - it might just be perfect for your shelter! http://www.maddiesfund.org/open-selection-putting-dogs-and-cats-on-the-fast-track-to-adoption.htm

02:01:08
