Our community did a food assessment a few years ago. It did culminate in many ideas. However, the one we have hired the VCC for is to create a food system focused on farmers selling to institutions, ie hospitals, schools, & restaurants

Our assessment spanned 1 year. It was good to have a length of time for people to learn about what our community needs and resources were.
An assessment I was involved with in Mendocino County resulted in a Food Action Plan that is now guiding food work in the community. It was a major community-based undertaking but helped get some great collaboration going
Did a food system assessment in 2013 for the city/county of Pueblo, Colorado in the past. (http://county.pueblo.org/sites/default/files/documents/Pueblo%20County%20Food%20System%20Assessment%20Public%20Health%20%26%20Food%20Access%20Report%202013.pdf) Now working on a national landscape assessment with ESI on incubator and shared use kitchens.
One of our organizational partners is looking at why more people who are eligible or enrolled in SNAP are not using their double-up benefit at Farmers' Markets.
Could the Southern Wisconsin assessment be shared and a link included?
Another organizational partner is looking to address childhood hunger and another is looking to expand farm-to-school efforts in the region. We are trying to collect personal stories and also map food resources so all the partners can use the data to work more effectively on their own and together.
Kathy, can you speak to the level of capacity, staffing, support, etc. that is needed for an organization that is wanting to do an assessment?
Would these assessments work at the level of an area within a city? I work in North Minneapolis and that’s where our focus is.

Question for Kathy or anyone else - can you speak to some of the major differences between urban and rural communities when it comes to pursuing assessment work? We are working in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, and are hoping to focus our study to better understand some of the gaps that exist here between food resources that exist and the level of access; e.g. "why, despite our best efforts, are the people who EAT here not connecting with the folks who GROW here?" We're also interested in understanding what are the NEEDS and WANTS of the residents in this region in terms of food resources. Most of this assessment work tends to be focused on urban populations, and the community composition is very different in a more rural area.

Rachel Brice, Our assessment was very much revolving around what your comments/frustrations are. We had a kickoff and then divided the resulting groups into study groups. We have a strong Food and Growers Association-a volunteer vision casting promoters of food and community and farmer education.
