00:29:50 EBabcock: In your experience, do you offer most students that do an audition rotation an interview? Is this something that a student can reasonably expect when doing a audition rotation? Follow up, are programs more likely to accept a student who has rotated through?
Salman Rahim
32:31
September/October rotation too late for sloe? Do PDs wait for the sloes to come in?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:39:11 marymclean: Is it still important to get a SLOE from an away rotation ending late November, if you already have 2 SLOEs?
Daniel Piedmonte
40:54
Is it still possible to match at a program where you turned down an away rotation?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:45:18 marymclean: Can you use part of your personal statement to explain a Poor step 1 score?
Elena DiMiceli

If your home institution grades your EM rotation pass/fail, will PD's know this or will they assume you did not get honors?
Vir Singh

Following the first message asked about the likelihood of receiving an interview at an institution at which one does an away rotation, I scheduled an away rotation in January at an institution I have a strong interest in, because I start fourth year late. How would you feel about an average candidate to which you did not extend an early interview contacting you and saying, "Dear Program Director, I am doing a late rotation with you because I have a strong interest in your program. I hope you might consider scheduling an interview during my rotation as I give your program its own opportunity to evaluate me as a future EM physician"?

00:48:23 blang: How many patients do you expect a sub-i student to see on an 8 hour shift? How much time do you expect them to spend interviewing/planning/presenting them to you?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:50:53 blang: Also, does volunteering to put together educational presentations for other students/residents look good and helpful, or just look like a gunner?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:51:31 EBabcock: Is it ok to tell a PD after rotating how much you want to be with their program? IE: Love the program, my family/husband are here, this is where I want to be or is this a too forward thing to do?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:52:31 stevenchadwick: How often is an interview offered during an audition rotation? Thank you!
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:52:53 sg: If the earliest I can get a SLOE is September, is it better to wait to submit the application after I get the SLOE in September or is that too late?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:56:49 marymclean: Does doing 3 away rotations raise eyebrows for any reason?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:58:10 Neha: Do you have advice for balancing being thorough in your patient interactions/presentations and being efficient? I know this takes practice and preferences can vary among attendings, but I’d appreciate your view on this. Thank you!
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:58:10 nayanapaul: Is it recommended to get a SLOE from every audition rotation?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
00:58:59 joneill: If I’m rotating at a program that’s my top choice, how do you recommend communicating that to the program?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:04:19 blang: Does volunteering to put together educational presentations for other students/residents look good and helpful, or just look like a gunner?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:04:52 hwolsief: If we rotate in a community ED (in addition to locations with a residency program), should we have the clerkship director there complete a SLOE even if they are not the residency director?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:05:20 innocentnew: Weight of Step 2 compared to Step 1?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:06:03 Ashley Griswold’s iPhone: are there certain score ranges that you would recommend explaining for step 1, comlex 1, step 2 CK?
Carlo V
01:06:51
Any advice on handling a gap year between graduating and applying? Clinical vs non-clinical job vs research during that time or any other activities that would look better to a PD?
Vir Singh
01:07:02
Perhaps I was too verbose in writing my question: what do you think of a student doing a January away rotation? Would it be reasonable to contact the institution if they didn't give you an early interview, stating you are rotating with them late and would love to interview at that time?
Bradley Wasser
01:09:01
how do you feel about non-EM letters?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:09:17 Joshua: Any advice specific to US IMGs?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:10:18 Will: Interview offers will likely be sent while on shift. Any thoughts on how to appropriately quickly respond to those interview slots without looking like I am not focused on my current work? i.e. responding to emails on my phone.
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:10:30 stevenchadwick: If you can get a SLOE from your core EM rotation but are also doing three away rotations is it best to just wait on the away SLOE’s? You mentioned diminishing returns.
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:10:58 Dave: Any words of wisdom for students from smaller programs that lack an EM program? Are we at a disadvantage compared to the "prestigious" schools?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:11:33 Will: Is there a certain aspect of applications that will likely result in interview offers? In other words does a certain portion of it carry more weight?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:11:48 Joshua: Any advice specific to US IMGs?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:12:05 Neha: Going back to that first questions, would it be better if your third/fourth away was an ultrasound or toxicology rotation?
Vir Singh
01:13:06
Is a candidate that, due to scheduling issues, has to take STEP II in October, does that make an otherwise solid candidate dead in the water? Does notifying programs of the score when released in November mitigate this - or is it too late?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:13:12 joneill: Any benefit to doing other non-EM fourth-year rotations at sites with EM programs that you’ve already auditioned at?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:13:14 EBabcock: What happens to an applicant who fails the step 2 CS exam? Thanks for all your responses!
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:15:04 Vineet: in your opinion how much impact does networking play in the overall process (getting an interview, being more likely accepted, etc.)?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:15:18 stevenchadwick: on our CV do want to see all the posters that a research project went to versus the publication if any? Does the former seem like fluff?
Carlo V
01:18:38
Any advice on handling a gap year between graduating and applying? Clinical vs non-clinical job vs research during that time or any other activities that would look better to a PD?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:19:21 stevenchadwick: Also if applicant does very well on the usmle’s but decent on the comlex’s would this raise a re flag?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:21:02 Dave: Any words of wisdom for students from smaller programs that lack an EM program? Are we at a disadvantage compared to the "prestigious" schools?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:22:17 innocentnew: If you do an away rotation on the west coast do other regions look down up those applicants
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:23:18 Neha: Advice for if you’re trying to break out of your geographic region?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:23:40 Lauren: For those of us who are not at institutions with an EM residency program and receive little exposure to skills such as intubation, thoracostomy, etc. is there anything that you recommend for those students to prepare for their aways?
Unknown Speaker
00:00
01:24:21 Neha: Is it a plus to be ACLS or ATLS or PALS certified?
Unknown Speaker
00:00

Unknown Speaker
00:00
