Please drop your questions here, or raise your hand using the “Raise hand” function so we can call on you shortly.
Stefanie Murray
26:08
If you need help being matched with a university partner, we can help with recommendations to match you, too. I know that can be tough if you don’t have exact connections to folks at the universities!

Stefanie Murray
27:27
Geoff, I see you. We can call on you next.
Ernabel
27:54
How can a college become a partner?
Kerry Margaret Butch
28:06
How much grant funding is available?
NatalieHarrington
29:01
Can you speak to the Evaluation Criteria you use when reviewing grant proposals?
Geoff Belinfante
29:03
If you have applied in the past and been turned down, may we apply for the same grant again? Is there more money from the state this time around or are you just making fewer grants for more money?
Daran Smith
29:16
Do all projects have to focus on either COVID-19 or climate reporting, or is that just one standalone focus area? (it seems like it's standalone, but just want to confirm)
Josie Gonsalves
29:20
Will the academic partner have to provide any matching support (in-kind or other)?
Melissa Helmbrecht
29:33
Can we partner with more than one college/university?
Christine Lemesianou (she/her) Montclair State U
30:35
Are all grants for projects that must complete in 1 year?
Georgia Kral
30:36
Can an applicant pair with a University that is NOT a member?
Stefanie Murray
31:00
@Georgia, no. It has to be a member university as stated in the legislation.
Stefanie Murray
31:14
@Melissa, yes, as long as one is one of the member universities.
Stefanie Murray
31:44
@Ernabel, the universities were added via legislation.
Stefanie Murray
32:37
@Daran, that is one standalone focus area, yes.
Georgia Kral
32:40
Follow up, could an outlet that is linked with a non-member university still apply, provided they partner with a member U as well? How would that work?
Stefanie Murray
32:49
@Georgia, yes!
Stefanie Murray
33:16
We had that happen last time, Stories of Atlantic City is based at Stockton but also worked with Rowan on its grant.
Josie Gonsalves
33:24
Is the evaluation matrix also public?
christinevogel
33:31
How big a disadvantage is it to be submitting for a project in Newark?
Stefanie Murray
34:44
@Josie, if the university is the lead applicant, they MUST put in 10%. Otherwise, they are not required to put in anything and in fact most budgets will want to consider if compensation is needed for the faculty or staff member you seek to involve. That is something important to discuss up front.
Angeline Dean
35:01
Great, I was about to ask about Kean.
Georgia Kral
35:40
Would it be beneficial for the applicant if the partner is determined before submitting?
Geoff Belinfante
35:52
Is there a preference for print journalism over "broadcast" journalism.
Josie Gonsalves
38:33
Not clear
Molly de Aguiar (she/her)
39:41
@Geoff - no preference for print vs broadcast vs digital
christinevogel
39:58
We had requested feedback on our proposal last year, but weren’t lucky enough to get any. Is it too late to request some feedback so we can improve our proposal for this round?
Molly de Aguiar (she/her)
40:34
I’m sorry about that Christine - we can try to get you some feedback
Geoff Belinfante
40:55
Thank you
christinevogel
41:25
Thank you!
NatalieHarrington
41:47
What is needed to establish/formalize this partnership with a University? I'm not familiar with this process. Thank you.
Stefanie Murray
41:49
@Christine, I can pull up your application and get it to the grants committee tomorrow so they can get you feedback.,
Josie Gonsalves
43:12
I’m only responding to the “OPRA” reference.
Angeline Dean
46:13
Can a grant work with two cities?
Christine Lemesianou (she/her) Montclair State U
46:23
What are critical dates: decisions about proposals and fund availability?
Georgia Kral
47:51
One more quick clarification- if the news outlet is NOT a 501c3, can they then apply WITHOUT the U being the “lead” and contributing funds? It seems like it may be difficult to find a partner and also ask them to pay into the grant? Thanks.
Aziza Kibibi Azizakibibi.com
49:02
Can I submit a program proposal that I submitted on the first round? I wish I was able to get feedback.
Center for Cooperative Media
51:50
I believe the answer to Josie's question is: The board will double check and get back to you with a definitive yes or no.
Molly de Aguiar (she/her)
52:08
@Josie - thanks for that clarification. I don’t know the answer to your question - perhaps Chris or John does
Angeline Dean
52:16
Thank you
Aziza Kibibi Azizakibibi.com
52:42
Do online or web series programs qualify?
Molly de Aguiar (she/her)
52:45
Aziza - I’m sorry that you didn’t get feedback. If you let us know which proposal you were associated with, we can do our best to try to get you some feedback
Molly de Aguiar (she/her)
52:59
And yes, online and web series programs are welcome
Stefanie Murray
53:03
Aziza, I got you. I pulled your application to get it to the grantees committee.
Georgia Kral
53:29

Ernabel

How does one find the right university partner? Is their a point person?
Josie Gonsalves
54:02
Fantastic!
Georgia Kral
54:26
Right- makes sense.
Ernabel

Stefanie Murray
56:48
Ahh thanks Christine!
Stefanie Murray
56:53
I missed that one earlier 🙂
Aziza Kibibi Azizakibibi.com
57:17
Does it hurt your chances of being funded if 1 nonprofit submits more than one program?
Aziza Kibibi Azizakibibi.com
59:39
The application is open already?
Stefanie Murray
59:48
If you can have your fiscal agent ducks in a row before you apply, that helps the Board get the checks out more quickly.
Josie Gonsalves
59:51
Can a news org headquartered in one city, covering stories and working with contributing writers in other cites, apply to support such?
Center for Cooperative Media
59:55
