Canadian Educators: Managing Your Anxiety from Returning to School - Shared screen with speaker view
Who can see your viewing activity?
It is concerning the in and out of students from day to day and week to week attending school. Students traveling to school with other adults, families, neighbours, etc. the circle gets larger in terms of unknown contacts coming into the classroom
I have anticipated fears of if and when schools open up, that some students won’t be prepared as usual, with their supplies ( so having to ask others for pens, pencils etc. ) and for the joker students who would violate personal space for students and staff. I see challenges which could create more fear for all concerned !
Help others, but at the right time!
How do you have distancing in a High School class with 30 or more students? There is no way you can have students 6 feet apart ?
Hi everyone - thank you for joining us! Please note that our French live caption isn’t working at this time, therefore we will be sending out the French video a few days after the webinar
Thanks all for your patience and apologies for the technical issue
Anxiety about the cleanliness of the classroom and school, classroom and desktops not cleaned or swept in weeks if not months
Lack of information causes anxiety
I know of one school where two students were sent home because the Mom has covid symptoms and is waiting for testing results. That teachers is panicing.
Going into a long weekend with no information
Why can we only pick one?
I felt anxiety and guilt because I was exempted because of underlying health issues, and I felt bad for my colleagues having to work on site. I was relieved for them when I heard the news today.
My thoughts, too greerkaiser… I could pick a few options!
Couldn’t answer more than one item for #2.
Elana-I feel the same way-but my colleaugues ARE back.
jenni de la vega
I feel guilty for the frontline workers at the store
jenni de la vega
i feel so bad for doctors and nurses who will lose their lives
Before 1:00 pm. today, we still weren’t told as to who was taking care of distance learning and who would teach only in the class.
Elana I am in the same situation as you
There seems to be a thought of all is great in the school from the admin and what a great job staff is doing but the reality in the classroom is just not congruent with that message… Complete disconnect
jenni de la vega
learning curve about online was harsh
I feel a lot of panic about the future
Many parents have decided that as far as they're concerned, the school year is already over. They'll simply start fresh in September. I'm in B.C.
Could one of the Quebec panelists tell me if exempt teachers in Quebec are taking a médical leave or working from home?
We are working from home
I am in Quebec, working from home
the decision people are out of touch or not tuned in at all with life in a classroom
Everyone has to accept and be compassionate that each teacher has a separate story and if you need to stay home, feel secure and OK with that
supporting the home school children
No training was given for online learning, and we were supposed to start on the 19th!
I want to return to work but have asthma and am no Spring chicken
If you get Corona ( from work) is that a WSIB claim ?
Good question dumaisr
Quebec teachers work from home
if they are exempt
During these times self-care is vital… it’s the only thing we have control over. What strategies do you recommend?
Do we have the right to refuse unsafe work?
Teachers in BC will be expected to teach both in the building with students and online 1 day/ week from the school building…….
teachers will be paid full salary while recovering
In some cases you can get a “temporary” exemption in Quebec from in school, but will work on ed kits sent home to parents and kits prepared by QC govt
You can refuse to work if you think the CNSST guidelines are not being respected but you need to prove it
I've had hate email from one parent. Telling me she is tired of doing my job for her son while I'm sitting at home doing nothing.
great questions about if you get sick from covid will you be covered if you return to in school teaching - and how much coverage?
Guilt because of the anxiety and I am not in the hospital with Covid patients, a lot of talk constantly from public no health or safety issues because kids do not get Covid, so everyone is safe
I got disconnected. Tech issues
families are struggling to meet basic needs, lineups for everything; everything takes 5 times longer on an errands list and then add the constant adjustment to plans that have very little real world information, teachers are burning out
At what level does everything get so overwhelming that one stops caring and stops trying?
Will BC teachers be supplied with PPE such as masks, face shields, etc?
I mean if you get sick from your experience teaching at school (with covid) what will happen - how much coverage will you get?
the children are developing rashes from the strong adult-level hand sanitizer sent to the schools from the board
BC teachers will not be given any PPEs.
BC fight for PPE QC did and we got some
my admin said that we don’t need PPE I’m in BC
Now that I am back in school teaching, continue to get emails and requests from both students and teachers for work or followup on work sent to me by email, cannot keep up with that
Dale, our school will provide it as an option
We should not pay for our own PPE
Linda and Denise, Here in Victoria, NO. Although you can 'bring them from home.'
Hey Dale: probably the same parents who say “ nice to have the summers off .”
Mine won't. I can get my own if I want.
B.C. folks, it is optional at our school. Will be provided. Masks anyways.
Does anyone know where to get face Shields in a small quantitY
Linda, that varies from district to district. Abbotsford says no to providing it.
Prince George, BC. I don't believe there is any PPE being provided.
I have started to use the read aloud function on my computer to help me read the many many emails / documents coming in
In BC- SD73- Kamloops Thompson, we are not being provided PPE but we can bring our own if we want.
Marilyn, Unreal! Union president or WCB should be all over this.
Not supplying workers with adéquate protection is going to contribute to anxiety
Andrew Miki, we've been tossing the PPE topic around. Obviously a huge stressor for us as it is yet another adaptation that teachers are forced to make, whether now or in the new school year.
It is really hard to find PPE in small towns and when you do find masks, they are so overpriced
box breathing before after during after trigger is helpful
I don’t usually have wine during the week but I definitely have been having more glasses of wine during the week in the evening!
Me, my wife, and my adult daughter are all working from our home. We really need to be aware of the other's triggers so that we don't take their bad mood personally.
PPE it is inevitable that students will be in your bubble. Students ask questions and to see their work you need to get close
I find with more time on the computer than usual, my eyes are sore and I get headaches. So I try to go for walks with my dog maybe every 90 minutes or so. !
PPE is our 'shark music' Andrew Miki
I leave my computer in my office, and try not to go on too much. Giving myself breaks away from the emails and social media. Diane
I find the Zoom staff meetings very stressful. Tons of tech issues
The challenge is now that no one seems to have a regular day...everyone is "on call" all the time, receiving emails at all hours of the day and night, and in the case of our union leaders, being called to meetings constantly!
Working from home - I go for a walk "around the block" when needed
Question for teachers from Quebec back in classroom …. Do you have the number of students that you should have respectant the 2meters ?
yes, the minister said 15 max but actually the classroom space can't accommodate more then 9
set boundaries and stick to them; share with families and admin
Can you speak to the level of exhaustion that happens amidst such rapid change and uncertainty?
It is logistically impossible in most classrooms to keep the recommended 2 mètre distance between students.
If they are sitting still, pretty close I have 11 in my class of 23. but when they get up to go to the bathroom wash their hands, etc. or doing work, the students move… they are not statues. and many have issues
Diane: As a specialists, I teach 17 classes and zooming in and out of classes has been very challenging.
Some parents are expecting tons of work, which ample amount is given each week. Some of these parents have children who haven’t handed anything in, but the parent says, “oh yes she’s/he’s done the work!
There was a pétition in Quebec, right? Did this have an effect?
there is a level of grief going on as well amidst this
I have much difficulty sleeping, and difficulty staying focused. My mind never stops.
Right on, Heidi
There are also so many comparisons between teachers in the public and private sector. Teachers in Quebec, and teachers in other provinces. Teachers in Quebec and teachers in the U.S.A
The teachers at school feel like they are part of a huge experiment
Yes, agree Jaime!
I don't want to be in a science experiment
in BC we are being told to slowly broaden our social circles, going back in classroom isn’t a slow opening to social circle, it does feel like a TEST GROUP; grief for populations in the east is very real
Totally agree Jaime.. We are the guinea pigs in QC and the age changed from 60 to 70 so all teachers would have to work..ridiculous
Teachers need to stop being “yes” people when something is unjust!
How do we, as teachers, know if the safety standards are being met if we don’t know exactly what they are?
Feel so bad for our brothers and sister educators in Quebec who have schools opened when the number of cases were the highest in the Country. What kind of thinking that?
Do you have strategies to witness other’s heavy feelings without getting weighted down one’s self?
Safety standards were only given in the past week after all this time, and they’re unfair standards!
Good question, Gayla Meredith.
us but it is difficult with lower levels ex.k
Where do we find BC’s safety rules and who set these?
In QC in our school, I would like to know what the cleaning and health safety standards are right now, and who exactly is supposed to be doing the thorough cleaning.. is it teachers now too for all the cleaning?
I should say health standards.
i believe it is coming out Friday Denise with the announcement? Shelly
What do you do about the “culture of fear” because of reprisal?
Thank you everybody
Correct Shelley, Dr Bonnie tomorrow.
Thank you Heidi, off to have that wine now ;)
Thank you Andrew!
This has been helpful to hear about what is happening in other provinces
Thank you Andrew, Heidi and Stephanie for your time and knowledge
hang in there everyone, one day at a time
Thank you for this. It helps to hear from others.
I would like to buy a face shield but can only order packs of 25 to 100. Does anyone have information on where to get only a few face shields?
These sessions are quite helpful to all teachers - support here within the chat also.
jenni de la vega
you can make a face shield with clear plastic and a one hole punch. just hang the shield on a pair of glasses.
Some local pharmacies have face shields that can be purchased in small amounts.
Vancouver Aquarium is fundraising by selling masks and they are good looking - check their website
1 week is NOT enough time to prepare your school and classroom to return unless you are prepared to work 10 - 12 hour days in the classroom like QC teachers in my school did
The goverenment in Quebec has caused most of the anxieties because of the way they yoyo.
should teachers speak to union BEFORE talking to HR?
I saw someone make face shields using page protectors . Glasses make it work by having the arms go through the holes that are already there.
I currently use page protectors as my face shield in my class on my glasses
I agree Heidi! The government just made it so confusing on a day to day basis.
It seems like Education in Que was not at the forefront of the MEES' minds, since this began. Their plan was wishy washy. At first, they said to act like we're on vacation! Then, we got the Open School Website and kits. Today, they said, "We're cancelling the school year."
Great advice Heidi
Bring your staff rep to the chat with your admin.
government officials are humans and struggling with making the best choices with no experience or precedent
jenni de la vega
bc didn't get any open school kit. learning curve is harsh
You could ask you Health and Safety rep at your school before talking to the principal and HR.
Diane: I had to purchase my own mask.
I missed the first bit of the webinar, how do we access it afterward?
Thanks for taking the time to hold this webinar. It’s vital for members to have this connection with supports for their well-being - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
I am curions to know how many hours people are working per day
In BC in sd73, we ave a health and safety group in the schools.
Thank you all
LOTS!! With an hour and a half walk or bike ride around 4:0 and then back at it
Maybe 6 hours. Even our principal said to sent your boundaries. WE are not on call 24/ 7
Thank you...it's very valuable
thank you so much!
great job Andrew some great reminders. thx Heidi and Stephanie for your stories
I'm on a 40% workload...and I'm working about 40 hours a week trying to get ready for online teaching next week
35 or mor a week and am an online teacher for k.
If you feel there is an unsafe condition, see your administrator. They as the employer are responsible for providing a healthy and safe workplace. They must investigate the situation and implement control measures to mitigate the hazard..
Thank you ! From Diane
We have Health and safety reps in all schools in Vancouver BC
