Prof Peter Ryan (Director of the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology @Professor at the University of Cape)
Peter Ryan started working on the impacts of plastic ingestion on seabirds in 1984, and has been monitoring marine plastic pollution around South Africa and the adjacent Southern Ocean ever since. He chaired the session on impacts of marine plastics at the Third International Marine Debris Conference held in Miami in 1994. The main conclusion of this meeting was that plastics pose a significant threat to marine environments, and that the focus of research should be on effective mitigation. Accordingly, most of his recent research focuses on tracking amounts and types of plastic, with a view to providing feedback on the efficacy of measures implemented to tackle marine debris. He also is interested in identifying the relative importance of different sources of marine litter. In this talk he reports on some of his findings about the sources of marine litter along the African coast and at remote islands in the South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans.
