Please join artist Jake Troyli in conversation with curator and writer Danny Dunson on a virtual walkthrough of Troyli’s solo exhibition ‘Don’t Forget to Pack a Lunch!’ currently on view at Monique Meloche Gallery. Troyli will discuss his dynamic new body of work, aimed at investigating the construction of otherness and the commodification of the black/brown body. This timely evolution of the artist’s practice confronts and explores labor capitalism and sweat equity as a demonstration of value, challenging the erroneous notion that it is only through arduous performances of labor that importance is earned.

He will attend the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME in the summer of 2019. His solo exhibitions includeAwkward Handshake,Tempus Projects, Tampa, FL(2018) andAlways leave them wanting more!, ArtsXchange, Saint Petersburg, FL (2018). Troyli has been awarded a Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship for the 2019-2020 season, was an ACRE resident in Steuben, WI (2018), and received a Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist Grant, Largo, FL (2017). His work has been in numerous group exhibitions, including Show Me Yours, Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago, IL (2019); Extra Butter, Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL (2019); XL Catlin Art Prize, San Francisco Art Institute, CA (2018); and Secret Garden, Henao Contemporary Center, Orlando, FL (2018). Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show with Monique Meloche Danny Dunson Danny Dunson is the founder and owner of Legacy Brothers, an artist development consultancy that prepares emerging and underrepresented artists to transition within the contemporary art market. In 2020, Legacy Brothers initiated a global arts residency; an intensive incubation program that mentors emerging talents. The Legacy Brother’s Artist Residency grants critical mentorship and financial endowments to the developing practices of artists in Brazil, Hati, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Senegal, and the United States. Responding to economic needs of Black arts community members that escalated during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, Dunson started the Legacy Brothers Book Fund, providing brand new art books for marginalized community members. As a trained art historian, art advisor, curator and writer, and most recently co-founder and editor-in-chief of ArtX, Dunson has dedicated his life to bringing the contributions of artists of color to the fore.
