Honoring the Memory of Babi Yar
Between 1941 and 1943, the Nazis shot between 70,000 and 100,000 people at Babi Yar, including almost the entire Jewish population of Kiev, Ukraine. From September 29-30, 1941, 33,771 Jews were expelled from their homes and shot to death in a ravine outside of Kiev. Despite being home to one of the largest massacres of Jews during the Second World War and the largest mass grave in Europe, the history of Babi Yar is often lesser known. On the eve of the Operation Barbarossa anniversary, the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, join American Jewish Committee (AJC); legendary human rights activist, Soviet Refusenik, Jewish hero, and Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC) Board Chairman Natan Sharansky; and Ruslan Kavatsiuk, Deputy CEO of BYHMC, as we examine the historical importance of Babi Yar and explore the plans for the establishment of the first modern Holocaust museum in Eastern Europe.
