Online Art Discussion: Plaster Casts and New Ways of Seeing the Past
Studying and drawing reproductions of sculptures in plaster cast form has had a long tradition in artistic training, as exemplified by artists such as Matisse, Rodin, Picasso, and Manship who had studied plaster casts of ancient Greek sculpture while pioneering modernism. In conjunction with the exhibition Manship: Ancient Made Modern, Fairfield University professor of art history Katherine Schwab will provide context for the importance of plaster casts as vehicles for learning how to capture past styles.
