Virtual CPC: National Action Towards Climate Change: The Role of Parliaments and Parliamentarians
The impacts of a warming planet has become one of the defining global challenges for the international community. The science has overwhelmingly coalesced to provide the clearest picture yet on the effects of human activity on our planet. A major challenge over the coming years will be to increase ambition on all aspects of the climate change response. The trillions that will also be spent on recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic also means it is critical that climate plans put in place now are right. Importantly, this means ensuring COVID-19 recovery plans are aligned with national climate change action plans.
Parliamentarians are uniquely placed to ensure the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement and the ratcheting up of global ambition by influencing their own national climate change agenda. The webinar will address the central role parliament plays in shaping national climate policy and filling the important gaps between the global, national and local levels. It will explore how they can support national legislative responses to climate change, including the Paris Agreement ratification process; improve transparency and accountability of national actions in line with Paris Agreement commitments, and; strengthen the capacity of fellow parliamentarians around climate change challenges in order to improve their legislative oversight functions.
