While the situation in Haiti rarely makes the news, the current issues facing the island nation should concern us all. A deepening economic crisis and growing fuel and food shortages have sent people to the streets protesting government corruption. These protests have been ongoing over the past year, recently escalating when at least four people were killed when police open fired on protesters. But the crisis in Haiti is not just about corruption. The country has recently been dealt devastating blows of hurricanes and droughts that dried up food production and destroyed housing. Neoliberal economic policies and climate injustice, poor nations bearing the brunt of climate change, are at the root of the current crisis.
