Growth of the commercial net zero construction market is picking up. Join us for a discussion of trends and case studies of net zero construction New Building Institute’s Research Director, Cathy Higgins. Cathy has over 25 years in energy efficiency strategic planning, research, policy and large-scale project management. At NBI she manages work involving Zero Energy Buildings, measured performance, emerging technologies, market assessment and supports business development. She frequently shares findings on buildings and market trends nationally through conferences, webinars and meetings with practitioners, program staff and policy makers. Cathy is currently leading a $5 million field demonstration in LA on the retrofit potential and energy savings for shading and lighting technologies. Other recent projects include support on the New York Getting to Zero study, a gap analysis of California zero energy emerging technologies, and the energy performance of radiant cooling and heating systems energy use with UC Berkeley.

Cathy Higgins, Research Director, will share the latest information on zero energy commercial buildings and policies. Ms. Higgins will present the trends on location, type, size, and energy performance that make these buildings ‘solar ready’ as well as the local and state policies driving to zero energy and zero carbon outcomes.
Alexi Miller, Senior Project Manager, will give an overview of the GridOptimal Buildings Initiative. GridOptimal is a collaborative initiative that brings together major utilities, designers, regulators, and other national entities interested in optimizing building-grid interactions. Attendees will learn how the new metrics (currently being developed) will quantify the ways in which building features and operating characteristics can support more effective grid operation and how these metrics will help align the zero energy buildings of tomorrow with the grid.
