Chemical substances have increasingly been a subject of concern and attention from fashion, both for manufactured and imported articles. A proper chemical management system is the key to properly know, understand and manage the potential hazards and risks associated with chemicals used in the tannery.

Her commitment to sustainability dates back to 2013 when UNIC introduced sustainabilty into its core practices, bringing together all social, environmental and ethical issues into its annual sector report. She manages the UNIC sustainability report that every year makes a picture of the Commitment for sustainability of the Italian tanning sector, working with the sustainability team, organising and charing workshops. Chemist specialised in environmental, product safety and health regulations, she has gained over time experience on training and social accountability. Passionate about Circular Economy and CSR, she takes part of the Sustainability working group of Confindustria Moda and is member of the Technical Commission for Circular Economy of UNI (the Italian standardisation body).

Elisabetta Scaglia, biologist, works for UNIC group as senior expert in environmental and sustainability issues, related to leather production. She has achieved particular skills in several technical fields: chemical legislation (REACh and European and international regulations), research, process innovation, de-pollution engineering, analytical methods development, technical assistance on environmental studies (water budget, chemical load), Environmental Management System (Lead auditor for EN ISO 14001, EMAS and Leather at low environmental impact (Ecoleather) schemes. She is the Chairman of UNI (Italian Standardization Body) TC 013-Leather and Convenor of WG4-Specifications of CEN TC 289-Leather (European Standardization Body). At present, she is involved in leather sustainability promotion and implementation, in co-operation with the major international luxury brands.

Maurizio Masi (born in 1960) is full professor in Applied Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica “Giulio Natta” of Politecnico di Milano. His activity is centered on physical chemistry, reaction kinetics and chemical reaction engineering with focus on materials production processes for advanced inorganic materials (microelectronics and energy applications) or technopolymers, with particular emphasis on the sustainability and circular economy aspects. He is graduated MSc (cum laude) in Chemical Engineering and PhD in Electrochemical Engineering. In 1992 he was Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Author of more than 150 scientific papers in these areas published on internationally peer reviewed journals, 4 books and holds 10 international and 9 national patents.
