On Monday, March 22nd, Hays County will unveil a new public-facing jail population dashboard developed in partnership with the Vera Institute of Justice. The anonymized information provided to Vera directly from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office includes categories such as bail amount, charge, gender, race, and length of stay to provide insights into how the county uses the jail both on a daily basis and over time.
With this tool, stakeholders and community members can ask more detailed and informed questions, monitor real-time change, identify gaps in needed services and resources, and implement better policies to reduce the jail population. Hays County’s innovative approach provides a national model for counties committed to data transparency, community engagement, and ongoing oversight of their systems of public safety.
