Student Mental Health & Well-Being: Navigating Sexual and Gender Identity on Christian College Campuses
Join Dr. Mark Yarhouse, a clinical psychologist, author, and the Rech Endowed Chair in Psychology at Wheaton College, and Dr. Janet B. Dean, a licensed psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Asbury University, to review and discuss research on the mental health and well-being of students navigating sexual and gender identity on Christian college campuses. We will review recent data on well-established measures of psychological distress and well-being and consider which students may be at greater risk, as well as explore ways to provide support in our unique learning environments.

Mark Yarhouse
Director, Sexual & Gender Identity Institute, Professor of Psychology, Wheaton College
Dr. Mark Yarhouse is the Dr. Arthur P. Rech and Mrs. Jean May Rech Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College, where he directs the Sexual & Gender Identity Institute. Dr. Yarhouse was named a Senior Fellow for the CCCU to conduct a study of students navigating sexual identity and faith at Christian colleges and universities. He also wrote the featured white paper on sexual identity for the Christ on Campus Initiative for The Gospel Coalition. Dr. Yarhouse is currently the chair of the task force on LGBTQ issues for Division 36 (Psychology of Religion and Spirituality) of the APA. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is author or co-author of several books, including Understanding Gender Dysphoria: Navigating Transgender Issues in a Changing Culture. His most recent book is Emerging Gender Identities: Understanding the Diverse Experiences of Today’s Youth.
Janet Dean
Associate Professor of Psychology, Asbury University, Psychologist, District Minister
Dr. Janet B. Dean is associate professor of psychology at Asbury University, a licensed psychologist, and a licensed district minister in the Church of the Nazarene. As a fellow with the Sexual & Gender Identity Institute through Wheaton College, she has been a research co-investigator for about 15 years working on both the Christian Sexual Identity Project, which is a study of Christian sexual minorities at Christian colleges featured in the book, "Listening to Sexual Minorities" (InterVarsity Press Academic), and the Christian Gender Identity Project, which is a study of students navigating gender identity and faith on Christian college campuses. She has spearheaded the quantitative analyses for both projects and has co-authored multiple articles and presentations with her research colleagues, Dr. Mark Yarhouse and Dr. Stephen Stratton.
