NYMMEP 2021: Reimagining Opera as Film During the Pandemic
When the pandemic shut down opera houses across the country last year, it didn’t take long for composer David T. Little (Soldier Songs, Dog Days, JFK) to pivot to a new, visually compelling format: opera as film. Major opera companies like Opera Philadelphia teamed up with him to completely re-envision the production process—film sets, soundtrack recording sessions, film directors. As they produced new opera films from scratch, they discovered countless new dramatic, creative possibilities for the artform, now and in the future.

As part of New York Music Month Extended Play, an initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, join our conversation with Little, along with other acclaimed opera producers and creators, who discuss the process of turning opera into film, what they've learned, and their take on the future of opera on screen.
