Populism, Constitutionalism, and the Rule of Law
In this live webinar, political scientist and constitutional expert Professor Daniel Smilov explores the link between the rise of populism and the rule of law in liberal democracies, with a specific focus on the experience of countries from Eastern Europe.

Populism has often been defined as an anti-liberal trend in contemporary politics, which puts pressure on some central elements of constitutionalism: primarily the separation of powers and the protection of rights. Yet, the rise of populism has been connected in more complex ways with the rule of law: populism is not just a foe but may actually happily coexist with certain constitutional principles and practices.

Professor Smilov will present an account of situations in which populism could become dangerous to the rule of law and will contrast these with some of its more benign uses.

Watch online from 4pm BST on Friday 19 June, and put your questions to Professor Smilov.
