‘The Wizard of Oz Technique’ to SFBT and Positive Psychology Work
Milton Hyland Erickson (1901-1980) was a renowned American psychiatrist specializing in medical hypnosis and family therapy. He is considered the grandfather of brief therapy, strategic family therapy, family systems, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) and neurolinguistics programming. Michael Hoyt writes that the greatest gift that Milton Erickson gave to therapy is ‘utilization’. Steve DeShazer in an interview with Brian Cade called it the “Wizard of Oz” technique, and stated “we don’t give them anything that they haven’t already got”. This webinar will highlight the art of utilization and how to apply it with clients. Specifically, participants will learn how to take a client’s hobbies, interests, daily life and look for abilities, skills, character strengths and virtues. This webinar will also illustrate how to use ‘anything and everything’ - even what many might consider liabilities or the “weeds” - and reframe them to strengths and skills of living.

Dina Bednar is a registered psychotherapist, registered marriage and family therapist, and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Dina works at a children’s mental health clinic in Hamilton, Ontario. She is the associate director of the SFBT certificate program at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), the co-director of the Canadian Solution-Focused Center, and co-editor of the Canadian SFBT Newsletter. Dina trains groups internationally on SFBT, working with children and adolescents, and on Single Session Therapy.
