In Conversation Live with Dr David Halpern
Dr David Halpern, Chief Executive Officer of the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) and the UK’s National What Works Adviser, will be joining Professor Henrietta Bowden-Jones OBE, RSM Trustee and Psychiatry Section President, for a conversation about his career and early beginnings, how BIT separated from the Cabinet Office and now advises public and private organisations in a multitude of areas, and how BIT is playing a key role and providing important insights into antimicrobial resistance, vaccination, obesity, mental health and most recently a new program of research into behaviour science in the gambling industry. Dr Halpern will also discuss his contributions to the UK Government Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Halpern has led the BIT, also known as the Nudge Unit, since its inception in 2010. Prior to that, David was the first Research Director of the Institute for Government and between 2001 and 2007 was the Chief Analyst at the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit. David was also appointed as the What Works National Advisor in July 2013. He supports the What Works Network and leads efforts to improve the use of evidence across government.

Before entering government, David held tenure at Cambridge and posts at Oxford and Harvard. He has written several books and papers on areas relating to behavioural insights and wellbeing, including a book about the BIT team entitled ‘Inside the Nudge Unit: How Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference’ in 2015 (second edition in 2019).
