Addressing sleep difficulties in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer

Up to 50% of young people with cancer experience ongoing sleep problems that can significantly impact upon quality of life and function. Presented by the Victorian AYA Cancer Service and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Department of Psychology, this webinar will explore common sleep issues in AYA (aged 15 to 25 years) and evidence-based strategies for addressing them. It will also introduce AYA Can-Sleep as an evidence-informed, stepped care model for identifying and managing sleep difficulties in this unique cancer population.

Topics include:
• Cancer and young people: the AYA context (Dr Jeremy Lewin, Medical Director, Victorian AYA Cancer Service)
• Sleep difficulties in AYA: prevalence, causes and impacts (Dr Josh Wiley, Head of Behavioural Medicine, Turner Institute for Brain & Mental Health, Monash)
• Youth experiences of sleep problems during and after cancer treatment (Sam Leaney & Dion Gazis, Consumer Presenters/Panellists)
• Cognitive-based therapy for insomnia (CBTi) in AYA: strategies and adaptations (Justine Diggens, Clinical Psychologist, PMCC)
• AYA Can-Sleep: a stepped care approach to managing sleep difficulties in AYA cancer survivors (Dr Maria Ftanou, Head of Psychology, PMCC)

Interactive presentations will be followed by a facilitated panel discussion informed by audience questions submitted before and during the event.

Intended audience:
• Hospital- and community-based health and mental health professionals with a role in supporting young people aged 15-25 with cancer
• Any practitioners with an interest in AYA mental health or sleep, including (but not limited to) general practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and other allied health professionals, community-based youth support services
