Jeremy Borg
Top Dog & Winemaker @Painted Wolf Wines
Jeremy and his wife Emma created the Painted Wolf Wines company in 2007, with the aim of marrying his love for winemaking with a desire to contribute in a meaningful way to conservation in Africa. Jeremy previously worked in a number of restaurants and wineries in the UK, USA, and latterly at Fairview in Paarl, at the same time completing a postgraduate degree in wine business through Adelaide University. Painted Wolf Wines specialises in Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, and the pawprint of the company has spread to five continents. A portion of all profit is donated to painted wolf conservation, primarily through the EWT and the Tusk Trust. This talk is suitable for adults.
Cole du Plessis
Wild Dog Range Expansion Project Coordinator & KZN Regional Carnivore Coordinator @The Endangered Wildlife Trust
I grew up in Port Shepstone and completed my honours degree in Environmental Science in Grahamstown. After receiving my guide and trails qualifications I worked as a priority species monitor of the African Wild Dog. This kickstarted my conservation career and cemented my lifelong bond with this amazing species. The pack that I monitored had been decimated by snares. Two of the pack members had three legs due to snares and most of the others bore snare wounds. My job was to monitor them to prevent this from happening again. From this intensive monitoring effort, I watched on as the pack grew from six to 40 individuals. It was this pack that inspired me to do my MSc in Protected Area Management before heading up the EWT’s Wild Dog Range Expansion Project. First-hand experience of the compassion these animals show for each other motivates me to ensure the highest standard of welfare and care as we pave the way for this species to roam in places where they have not been seen in decades.
