Rethinking the State Response to Youth Identified as Sexually Offending
Children/youth in child welfare systems often experience sexual abuse and/or are accused of sexual misconduct. Research indicates the vast majority of those with problematic sexual behaviors respond well to therapeutic treatments or "age out" of inappropriate behaviors. But Illinois law -- including those requiring registry of children/youth as sex offenders -- hasn't kept pace with the research and causes unnecessary harm. This workshop will address research on why children/youth engage in problematic sexual behaviors, the impact of current practice and successful treatment approaches. It will also examine registry laws and explore implications for child welfare and delinquency advocates.

Presenters for this webinar are Anita Weinberg, Director, ChildLaw Policy Institute and Lisa Jacobs, Manager, Loyola's Center for Criminal Justice Research, Policy and Practice.
