Review of Infant Deaths due to Congenital Anomalies
Birth defects are structural or functional abnormalities present at birth that can cause physical disability, intellectual and developmental disability and other health problems in children. Every year in the US, there are approximately 4,580 infant deaths due to birth defects or congenital anomalies, and about 1 in every 33 infants born has a major birth defect. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rank infant deaths due to birth defects as the number one cause of infant deaths annually. This presentation will discuss the most common congenital anomalies, steps for evaluation and prevention of possible anomalies, and tips for an effective review including family history, chart review, and risk of recurrence.
