Trade and Biodiversity (TraBio) Statistical Tool Launch
We are pleased to inform you that we are now launching the newly developed Trade and Biodiversity (TraBio) statistical tool via an online webinar on the 23rd of September.

What is it?

The TraBio statistical tool is comprised of a database of trade statistics on biodiversity-based products and a web page (available in English and French) which contains interactive maps and charts to help the user visualize the underlying data more intuitively. The tool is hosted on UNCTAD’s statistics portal UNCTADstat.

Background of the tool

Historically, the collection and reporting of statistics and data related to trade in biodiversity-based products has been very limited, scattered, and difficult to compare, due to the heterogeneity of its sources. There isn't a comprehensive repository of trade-related information on goods originating from biological resources, nor a complete classification developed for the analysis of trade dynamics related to biodiversity-based goods... until today.

Objectives of the tool

The TraBio statistical tool was borne from a close collaboration between the BioTrade Initiative and UNCTAD’s Statistics Service with the aim to address this gap. It targets policymakers, businesses, researchers, and other stakeholders with the objectives to:
- enable a better understanding of the significance of trade in goods with a biological origin,
- provide access to a harmonized, comparable, and centralized source of information on trade in biodiversity-based products, and
- gather, report, and monitor progress on the achievement of national and international policies, development processes and targets.
