This presentation will focus on concrete ways for teachers of the deaf to structure and sustain consistent communication with mainstream students’ educational teams and to encourage student involvement and participation in this process.

Emily has been actively involved with youth who are deaf and hard of hearing as a camp counselor for over three years at Clarke’s summer camp and was a co-leader of Clarke’s outreach “Buddies” program that brought together children who are deaf/hard of hearing to teach advocacy, empowerment and breaking down barriers through activities, games, and role-play. More recently, Emily has been interested in educating professionals in the field and co-presented at the Council for Exceptional Children’s Conference (CEC) in Orlando, Florida and the High Expectations for Students with Low Incidence Disabilities (HELIX) conference at Penn State University. Emily is passionate about educating individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Britt Coffey, PhD, MEd (Massachusetts Mainstream Services Supervisor @Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech) Britt is the Mainstream Services Supervisor for Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech in Massachusetts. She leads a team of 20 teachers of the deaf and speech-language pathologists who provide support to students with hearing loss and their teams in a variety of settings. Britt has worked in both general education and education of those who are deaf or hard of hearing and has published widely on topics related to teaching children with hearing loss. She has articles in the American Annals of the Deaf, the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education and the Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation, among others. She has presented nationally and internationally and enjoys working with general education teachers and teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing to help them improve their relationship with one another.
