Many fire and EMS departments across the nation are struggling to find new volunteer members and retain their current members. This session discusses the challenges of recruiting volunteers, presents valuable research collected as part of the NVFC's Make Me A Firefighter campaign, and offers ideas to help overcome recruiting challenges. During the second half of the session, retention challenges, potential solutions, and the importance of leadership will be covered.

Battalion Chief Al Alcalde has 40+ years in the Fire Service, serving in almost every role in the fire service from Firefighter/Paramedic to Fire Chief. Al has spent 3+ years as the Recruitment and Retention Officer for the 80-member combination La Habra Heights Fire Department in Los Angeles County. While there, he conducted the hiring of over 240 personnel during that time. Responsible for the management of a $900,000 SAFER grant. Al also has 18 years of grant writing and grant management experience, including 5 years as a AFG, SAFER and Fire Prevention and Safety grants Peer Reviewer, and has written, received and managed over 2 million dollars in Federal, State and local grants.
