AI and the Future of Learning
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology, with support from Digital Promise, will host listening sessions over the next two months on Artificial Intelligence (AI). We want to hear from all constituents involved in making decisions about technology in education, including but not limited to teachers, educational leaders, students, parents, technologists, researchers, and policy makers. The topic of this listening session is learning.

We are particularly interested in hearing about the most valuable future uses of AI for learning, which could include applications like extending expensive human tutoring services with less expensive AI tutoring, adapting instruction to increase motivation and engagement in learning, enabling students to develop in-demand workforce skills like teamwork, supporting greater inclusion of students with disabilities, providing students with more and better feedback on complex skills like writing and speaking, preparing students for the future of work, deeper support for learning of languages (including American Sign Language) and more opportunities for students to interact in do academic work in more natural ways using their phones and other devices. We are particularly interested in understanding where strong evidence supports a future of learning with AI. Conversely, we want to interrogate risks which apply both to AI in general and specifically to AI education, such as risks due to bias, unfairness, lack of transparency, issues with privacy and data security, trustworthiness, and more.

Staff from the Office of Educational Technology and Digital Promise will be in attendance to listen and the input that we receive will inform the development of a policy document addressing AI that builds on the Department’s National Educational Technology Plan.

Please note this opportunity is open to participants in the United States only.
