Craig Klugman, PhD "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt: Ethics of Genetic Genealogy & Law Enforcement"
Abstract:
“Murdered in 1971. DNA on a cigarette butt solved the case” and “3 cold case murders solved by DNA evidence” are two recent headlines espousing the use of genetic genealogy testing. By taking DNA samples from discarded items and comparing them to criminal and commercial databases, law enforcement has been able to crack crimes long thought unsolvable. While lauded by police and families of victims, opponents cite lack of consent, invasion of privacy, and lack of oversight as reasons against this approach. In this talk, Dr. Klugman will talk about the science, policy, and ethics of this new investigative tool and why you might think thrice about entertainment DNA testing.
