Dawit L. Petros & Dr. Teresa Fiore
In Conversation: Dawit L. Petros with Dr. Teresa Fiore
Selected by the Vision & Justice Project and Frieze New York to participate in a special series of talks, exhibitions and screenings, Tiwani Contemporary is delighted to invite you to a forthcoming live conversation between gallery artist Dawit L. Petros and Dr. Teresa Fiore, a scholar of Italian History, Culture and Migration, to mark the tribute to the exemplary work of Vision & Justice and its founder Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, Associate Professor at Harvard University.

The conversation will address the research and strategies in the artist's work 'Spazio Disponibile' which are directed to re-reading Italian emigration to the United States via Italy’s colonial project in the Horn of Africa and Libya. The discussion will examine how these histories of mobility connected to contemporary movement to nations such as Italy and the United States propose complex questions of exclusion, inclusion and historical memory. The conversation will focus on strategies of recoding and transformation applied to objects that produce colonial knowledge and categories of subjectivity.

The Vision & Justice Project is dedicated to examining art’s central role in understanding the relationship between race and citizenship in the United States. Rooted in the prescient thinking of Frederick Douglass, and his post-Civil War speech ‘Pictures & Progress’, the project wrestles with the urgent question of how, in a democracy, the foundational right of representation and the right to be recognised justly, has historically—and is still—tied to the work of visual representation in the public realm. This work helps us to expand our visual literacy which in turn could alter the lens through which we see the world. We are pleased to be in support of this research and endeavour, and to be actively involved in this conversation through this talk.
