Family caregivers provide over 80% of long-term care to frail, older adults and yet they remain largely invisible in the health care system. The Family Caregiving Institute at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing works to support caregivers and increase capacity of health care professionals to better partner with families.

Dr. Harvath is an internationally recognized expert in gerontological nursing. Whether in teaching, research or clinical practice, her passion centers on the health and health care for frail, older people and their family caregivers.

In this role, she leads initiatives and partnerships across UC Davis to ensure the best care, research and innovation for the older adult population. This includes leadership of the Family Caregiving Institute at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, collaborations with UC Davis Aggie Square and clinical initiatives throughout UC Davis Health. She currently serves as vice president for the Gerontological Society of America and assumes the presidency in January.
