The advent of computational techniques, fully integrated into design tools, has allowed for exceptional improvements in automation, speed, and optimization. Most importantly, it has allowed designers to harness complexity and embed intricate logic to enrich their design. In this seminar, by looking at examples from the natural world, we will show how complexity can be explored, decomposed into simple parts, scaled and manipulated, employing its potential for the generation of novel design outcomes. After a brief overview of the Python language and its application within Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, the course will focus on the exploration of the powerful in-built geometry types in Rhino (NURBS curves and surfaces as well as meshes). Through a series of structured workflows and the use of different Python libraries, it will be shown how the properties of these geometries can be leveraged to produce fields of interactions, reactive components, aggregations, and proliferation, accomplishing the generation of elaborate designs. By unwrapping the complexity of these processes, it will be shown how design can be ultimately liberated from the constraints of the tools, allowing for the free flow of creativity.
