Topic
The Role of Psychological Assessment in Therapy
Description
Training Description:
As mental health professionals, we work with each individual to gain an understanding of their experiences and help them improve their lives. Our training enables us to identify the symptoms our clients are experiencing and make appropriate diagnoses to inform treatment. However, there are often times in which it is challenging to gain a clear clinical picture. For example, someone may be experiencing a multitude of different symptoms that could be explained by a variety of diagnoses. Psychological assessment can help inform treatment by enabling clinicians to gain a more thorough picture of the client's personality as well as their emotional and intellectual functioning. This presentation will provide an overview of different types of psychological, personality, IQ, adaptive functioning, neurological, and other measures used in psychological assessment. You will learn when it is appropriate to refer for psychological testing, the different types of referral questions that can be answered, and how the results can inform your clinical work.
Learning Objectives:
1. Gain an understanding of different types of psychological assessments
2. Learn when to refer a client for a psychological assessment
3. Learn how a comprehensive psychological evaluation can inform treatment and improve a client's functioning
4. Gain essential information on the benefits of psychological evaluations in treatment
