Creating a Successful and Relevant Digital Community Engagement Initiative in Your Library: Graphic Novel Making Contest Toolkit from the San Jose Public Library
In its twelfth year, San José Public Library (SJPL)’s Graphic Novel Making Contest has become a summer tradition in the Bay Area that has grown to more than 200 annual submissions. Programs such as skill-building workshops, creator visits and demonstrations are offered in conjunction with the contest. In this session, SJPL staff will discuss tips and tricks of program development, as well as how to leverage partnerships and community support to maximize impact while working with budget and staffing constraints. Presenters will also share their experience with all aspects of this program during Covid-19.

Panelists include:
Jessica Lundin has been involved with the Graphic Novel Making Contest for the past 4 years, assisting in almost every aspect. She primarily handles submissions, judging preparation, and prize distribution. She also is on San Jose Public Library’s Summer Learning Committee and is the Adult Entertainment Media Selector for the system.

Jessica Novak has been involved in the Graphic Novel Making Contest for 8 years, starting with judging and moving to committee work. She utilizes her BFA in Animation/ Illustration to supplement artistic programming. She is also the YA Graphic Novel Selector for SJPL.

Alyssa Mendoza has been part of the Graphic Novel Making Contest for the past 6 years offering her strong networking and cosplay skills and is a cohort of the Working Scholars program.

Kyle Burkett is the current Graphic Novel Making Contest Committee Chair, and has participated in the contest since arriving in San Jose in 2018. He is the Branch Manager of three neighborhood libraries in San Jose, and has over a decade of program management experience in libraries.
