The Scottish Public Law Group is delighted to invite you to a webinar featuring a panel of senior judges. Lord Carloway, Lord Hodge and Tim Eicke QC will speak on the topic of courts and judges in times of crisis.
Scots public law is shaped by judgements emanating from the Court of Session, the UK Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. We have arranged for judges from each of these courts to present their insights and perspectives on the functioning of courts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Lord Carloway, Lord President of the Court of Session will speak about the "Necessity of Change". As head of the Scottish judiciary and Chair of both the Scottish Civil Justice Council and the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service Board, he is overseeing the adaptation of the Scottish courts in response to the Covid-19 crisis. The Lord President will discuss what measures have been put in place and what obstacles remain, as well as the longer term implications of the crisis for the administration of justice in Scotland.
Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court will speak about the boundaries of judicial law-making in public law and will touch on how the Supreme Court organised court hearings and ways of working in response to Covid-19.
Tim Eicke QC, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights will speak about the internal workings of the ECHR during the Covid-19 crisis as well as the application of the ECHR in the context of a public health crisis.
Following the presentations there will be a Q&A session. We welcome the submission of questions in advance by attendees. Please send your questions to SPLG.Events@gmail.com
