Learn mandolin with one of today's premiere players. This eight-week course will delve into early 20th century American string band music, focusing on playing old-time songs from Appalachia. Each week, we'll look at three songs: two from the old-time repertoire and one from the Carter Family (some of which are common to the old-time session repertoire). We'll look at ways of playing backup, simple approaches to lead playing, and we'll add exercises along the way to help improve picking technique and to help students learn the fretboard. We'll look at double stops in various keys as ways of ways of enhancing both lead and rhythm playing, and we'll work on getting smooth in our picking in both lead and rhythm playing to create smooth transitions from lead to rhythm and back. The goal will be to help students play old-time music better with others and to have more fun playing the mandolin in general!
The course is intended for upper beginner level students (knowing at least a handful of fiddle tunes and basic rhythm playing is recommended) to intermediate students, or students at any level who are looking to improve their fundamentals.
The class fee is $225. Register by December 12 for just $175! Register here, and we'll email you an invoice for the course fee in the next day or two.
