Fooled by Randomness: Loras College Masters in Analytics Program Seminar
A recent blog post revealed a startling pattern: winning the first game of the MLB baseball season is associated with 7 more wins over the entire season. However, this surprising finding was quickly disowned when it was discovered that the same finding applies to many different games (the 2nd, 3rd, etc.) throughout the season. The original author had been fooled into thinking that this was more than just a random event.

In this webinar, Dr. Dale Lehman, a leading analytics expert and Loras College faculty member, will deep dive into the data to investigate the relationships between different games in the season and total season wins, and how these relationships vary across teams, seasons, and home vs. away games.

This topic has relevance beyond baseball. Finding apparent patterns in data can lead to many false discoveries. Being “fooled by randomness” is a hazard for not only sports teams, but also investors, businesses, weather watchers, and many more. Dr. Lehman will show ways to avoid being fooled through careful analysis of data, and will discuss how the rapidly growing and changing field of analytics can be applied to many aspects of our lives.

Brief information will also be shared about Loras’s Master of Science in Applied Analytics and Graduate Certificate in Applied Analytics programs, which are both now accepting applications for Spring 2022!
