Examination of the peripheral blood film can provide useful diagnostic information on infection in a timely manner. The morphological features of microorganisms commonly identified by peripheral blood film examination will be reviewed. Morphological changes characteristically associated with certain infections will be presented. Morphological artefacts which might be mistaken for microorganisms will be discussed.
Learning Objectives - after participation of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify microorganisms on the peripheral blood film.
2. Identify peripheral blood film morphological changes which are characteristically associated with certain infections.
3. Be mindful of morphological artefacts which might mimic microorganisms.
