Critical Condition: “The Shale Crescent” and the Dream of an Appalachian Petrochemical Boom

The prospect of Appalachian petrochemical development has reached a critical juncture. For more than a decade, policymakers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have built their economic development strategies around the expectation that the region’s abundant supplies of natural gas would trigger a vast expansion of energy and manufacturing, bringing with it jobs and prosperity. But development of major projects in the region stalled well before the onset of the coronavirus crisis. And, in the virus’ aftermath, both global markets and policy responses to climate change have thrown into doubt the viability of the Appalachian petrochemical dream.

What is the likelihood of an Appalachian petrochemical buildout? How would our region change if one takes place? What will happen if it doesn’t?

On Wednesday, February 3rd at 10:30 A.M., join a panel of experts from economics, policymaking, and the petrochemical industry for “Critical Condition: ‘The Shale Crescent’ and the Dream of an Appalachian Petrochemical Boom,” the Ohio River Valley Institute’s inaugural forum and Q&A on the future of regional petrochemical development.

Our panelists include Kathy Hipple, Professor of Finance at Bard College and former financial analyst with the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), John Hanger, energy consultant and former Pennsylvania Secretary of Environmental Protection, and Anne Keller, a former Wood-Mackenzie petrochemical analyst and current industry consultant.
