Managing Chronic Pain Through Self-Help: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Guided Self-Help Programs Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Education

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (“ACT”) is an innovative approach considered effective in the treatment of chronic pain by the American Psychological Association. ACT distinguishes itself from more traditional approaches to pain through its focus on enhancing psychological flexibility to improve quality of life, rather than focusing on symptom reduction. In other words, instead of focusing on pain control strategies, ACT promotes greater acceptance and openness towards experiences as they are in the moment, as well as greater engagement towards values- based goals. Given evidence for the usefulness of ACT for chronic pain, there are increasing efforts to improve the accessibility of this type of treatment. In particular, self administered programs based on ACT are promising because they offer a cost-effective option that can be widely accessed. This presentation will present results of a recent RCT evaluating the efficacy of two self-help ACT interventions (internet delivered and bibliotherapy), in comparison to an active control group receiving education on pain.

d'acceptation et d'engagement comparé à l’éducation
