World of Wonders: Writing About Nature Amidst the Climate Crisis
What is it like to love a world that is threatened by extinction? Can writing about nature change the way we experience it in our everyday lives? Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s latest book, World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments, is an illustrated collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitant can teach, support, and inspire us. It’s a love letter to our planet and its wondrous creatures. In her lecture, the author will tell us more about her world of wonders, and how poetry can help us understand the urgency of the climate crisis.
Aimee Nezhukumatathil is author of four poetry collections – Miracle Fruit (2003), At the Dive-In Volcano (2007), Lucky Fish (2011), and Oceanic (2018). Her poems evoke the natural world, its animals and mud, the beauty and darkness of everyday life, and tell us what it is like to love a world in peril. Her latest collections of nature essays, World of Wonders, became a New York Times best-selling book and was chosen as Barnes and Noble’s Book of the Year.
Joining her as moderator of the discussion is the Bulgarian writer and translator of poetry and fiction, Angel Igov. Among his translated works are Wordsworth and Coleridge’s Lyrical Ballads, and novels by Paul Auster, Ian McEwan, Angela Carter, and more. He won the Krastan Dyankov Award for literary translation and the Hristo G. Danov National Literary Award for his novel, The Meek.
This event is part of the 2022 edition of the international literary festival CapitaLiterature, organized by the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation. The topic of this year’s edition is Writing to Save the World or writing in response to the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced, the climate emergency.
