CPPA - Alesya Courtnage - Hope Speaks: Integrating the language of Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Hope Theory
Tuesday, July 10, 2018
12:00pm to 1:00pmEST
Topic: Hope Speaks: Integrating the language of Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Hope Theory
Presenter: Alesya Courtnage

The literature from the field of positive psychology has been highly influential in positioning hope as dominant in conversations about how people navigate difficult times, and the presence of hope is recognized as being intimately connected to the human capacity to endure. However, the question of whether and how hopeful thinking can be increased within a clinical therapeutic context remains largely unexplored. Using Snyder’s Hope Theory as a backdrop, this presentation will examine how Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) intentionally amplifies hope and hopeful thinking by asking purposeful questions that increase motivation and expand possibilities for success. Participants will have the opportunity to view examples of SFBT in clinical settings. Future research questions, as well as the possible micro and macro level impact of including SFBT in the dialogue surrounding hope theory will be discussed.
