Development and regulation of COVID-19 vaccines in times of the pandemic

Description

Since the first identification in December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) spread all over the world. On 11th of March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global pandemic. In order to fight and prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the development process of safe and effective vaccines has to be accelerated. In her talk, Nadine will provide an overview on the different vaccine technologies, the current development status and on the theoretical risks associated with a coronavirus vaccine. Furthermore she will give an overview on how development and approval of the vaccines was speeded up and how the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut supports this process.

After a research period at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the US she graduated in the field of Oncology at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Heidelberg. She received her PhD from the Ruprecht-Karls-University, Heidelberg in Developmental Biology and continued as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the DKFZ. Nadine joined the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) in 2017 working in the field of regulatory science at the Innovation Office. There she was involved in the development of advice concepts offered by the institute to support developers of biomedicines, especially scientists from academia. At the beginning of 2020 Nadine intensified the regulatory work within the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) Office for Scientific and Regulatory Advice (OSRA) at PEI. As a project manager she supported DZIF projects with focus on vaccines and biomedicines with regard to the regulatory framework
