MSC Webinar 9: "Carrier Strike Group 21 and Britain's Resurgence in the Pacific" - Dr Alessio Patalano
The deployment of the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth carrier strike group (CSG) to the Indo-Pacific this summer was accompanied by a remarkable period of multilateral naval engagement across the region. The CSG’s presence facilitated a significant array of training opportunities with partner navies, including those of Australia, Canada, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and the United States, but it also served as a catalyst for a series of new and revitalized naval and defence arrangements, including AUKUS, the Quadrilateral (“Quad”) Defence Dialogue, and the Five Powers Defence Arrangements. The deployment was intended to signal the UK’s Indo-Pacific foreign policy “tilt” and Britain’s resolve in maintaining a naval presence in the region, and was accompanied by the announcement that the Royal Navy would soon permanently forward-deploy two River-class patrol vessels to the region. Dr. Alessio Patalano, a Professor of War and Strategy at King’s College London, will discuss the CSG mission and how the Royal Navy and UK fit into the Indo-Pacific and its complex evolving dynamics.
