Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) in partnership with the Conservative Friends of Afghanistan (CFA) are holding an online discussion titled the "Media and the Afghanistan Peace Process" to look at how journalists and activists are being killed in a wave of targeted attacks.
Around the country, journalists, human rights workers, moderate religious scholars and civil society activists have been murdered as they go about their daily lives. The U.S. watchdog SIGAR (Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction) says Taliban violence has risen by 50% since September, with media workers saying they don’t feel safe doing their jobs. The steady drumbeat of killings has cast a shadow of fear across the country, even as the government and Taliban are supposed to be hammering out a peace deal hundreds of miles away in Qatar raising serious doubts about the protection of free expression in any peace deal with the Taliban. With the May deadline for the NATO troop withdrawal fast approaching, this webinar wants to explore targeted attacks on civic space and public participation and what the future of Afghanistan will look like if this continues.
