Distinguished Culture and History Lecture: "The Musician, The Queen and the Jester: 3 Black Monuments in the Danish Colonial Empire"
This talk will put into conversation monuments of three Black figures in Scandanavia, all of whom are connected to the island of St. Croix in the former Danish West Indies: Victor Cornelins, Mary Thomas, and Adolf Badin (aka Couchi). This talk will explore ideas of what is being commemorated in these monuments that range from a child who was taken from St. Croix to be displayed in a cage in Tivoli in Copenhagen, to the leader of the largest labor revolt in Danish colonial history, to an enslaved child sent to the Queen of Sweden as a gift.
