Remote work is not a new phenomenon in the workplace. However, in the last five years, there has been a blossoming of all-remote or fully-distributed workplaces and not simply as small virtual shops. Companies such as Automattic, Zapier, Gitlab and InVision are remote at substantial scale and blazing new pathways into virtual culture and community. The choice is no longer whether or not to permit remote employees but how, when, and why to do so.
