Supporting Strong Schools and a Multiracial Democracy

In school districts all across America, students, parents, and educators believe that an honest, accurate, and fully-funded public education is the foundation for a just, multiracial democracy. But with so many threats to the public education systems that support our diverse communities, we need to turn our beliefs into actions, and our actions into a national movement that helps us all #HEALTogether.

H.E.A.L. Together (Honest Education Action & Leadership) is a new initiative from Race Forward to build that national movement, in partnership with national and local organizations and you.

Join us on March 30 to celebrate the launch of this critical campaign, learn from people connected to this work, and take action in your community! We’ll share tools to help you organize your school and community for educational equity — countering those bringing the culture wars to our schools under the guise of "Critical Race Theory," by banning books and censoring educators who teach honestly about race, gender, and sexual orientation.

You'll hear from speakers who are fighting for educational equity and who are students, parents, educators and concerned community members just like you — including Race Forward President Glenn Harris, National Education Association President Becky Pringle, Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Emmy award-winning social justice storyteller Sarah Eagle Heart, and the H.E.A.L. Together team led by longtime organizer James Haslam.

Becky is a middle school science teacher with 31 years of classroom experience and has distinguished herself as a fierce social justice warrior and defender of educator rights. Before assuming NEA’s top post, Becky served as NEA vice president and before that as NEA secretary-treasurer. She directed NEA’s work to combat institutional racism, and spotlight systemic patterns of racism and educational injustice that impact students. Under Becky’s guidance, NEA works to widen access and opportunity by demanding changes to policies, programs, and practices. The Association’s goal is to ensure the systemic, fair treatment of people of all races so that equitable opportunities and outcomes are within reach for every student. This is why Becky is a staunch advocate for students who have disabilities, identify as LGBTQ+, are immigrants, or English Language Learners. Glenn Harris (President @Race Forward) Glenn Harris is the President of the new Race Forward and Publisher of Colorlines. The new Race Forward is the union of two leading racial justice non-profit organizations: Race Forward and Center for Social Inclusion (CSI), where Glenn served as President starting in 2014. The new Race Forward will build on the work of both organizations to advance racial justice. Prior to the new Race Forward and CSI, Glenn worked as the Manager of the City of Seattle Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), whose mission is to end institutionalized racism in City government and promote multiculturalism and full participation by all residents. Glenn has supported the start of similar initiatives in jurisdictions across the country, and helped to found the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE). A prolific speaker and trainer, Glenn has helped hundreds of organizations across the country center racial equity in their work. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (Congressman, D-NY @United States Congressman) Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Ed.D., represents New York’s 16th District, which includes the Northern Bronx and parts of Westchester County, including Yonkers, New Rochelle, and Mount Vernon. Rep. Bowman began his career as a crisis intervention teacher in a Bronx public school and went on to earn a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Mercy College and a doctorate in education from Manhattanville College. In 2009, Bowman founded Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, a Bronx middle school focused on unlocking the natural brilliance of all children through a holistic curriculum, where he served as principal for a decade. Bowman was elected to Congress in 2020, running on a platform of transformative progressive policies that will improve the lives of those who have been legislated out of the American dream. Congressman Bowman is dedicated to passing visionary policy that infuses climate justice with economic and racial justice. Sarah Eagle Heart (Emmy Award–winning storyteller ) Sarah Eagle Heart is an Emmy award-winning storyteller focused on education and advocacy on behalf of Indigenous Peoples whose deep perspective is rooted in her life story as Oglala Lakota activist raised on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She enjoys utilizing innovative approaches and partnerships to amplify stories from grassroots communities, artists and movement leaders. Her partnerships include: Anne Hathaway, Bethany Yellowtail, Dispatch, Indigenous Women Rise, John Legend, Mark Ruffalo, Obama White House and Taboo of The Black Eyed Peas. Her partnership with John Legend and Baobab Studios on "Crow: the Legend" led to an 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Media as a Consultant Producer. Ms. Eagle Heart founded Eagle Heart Collectiv in 2019 to support her many areas of passion around narrative change and is currently Co - CEO of Return to the Heart Foundation, an Indigenous women led organization focused on resourcing innovative Indigenous women led initiatives. James Haslam (Senior Fellow, H.E.A.L. Together @Race Forward) James Haslam (he/him/his) serves as Senior Fellow at Race Forward leading the H.E.A.L. Together Initiative. As a leader who grew two visionary organizations that have been central to our social and racial justice movements, he brings over two decades of labor, community, and political organizing experience. He is the founder of Rights & Democracy (RAD), a bistate grassroots movement organization in Vermont and New Hampshire with the mission to establish multi-issue organizing strategies to building power for working-class communities to advance human rights and a strong multiracial democracy. Before founding RAD, James spent over 15 years as the executive director and chief organizer with the Vermont Workers’ Center, where he helped thousands of workers organize unions, fight for workers’ rights and livable wages, and led their Healthcare Is A Human Right Campaign from 2008-2015 helping pass the country’s first single-payer healthcare law that was inclusive of undocumented communities.
