Judicial Threats to Diversity in Medical Education
Join the Academic Physicians Section, Medical Student Section, and Minority Affairs Section on Thursday, October 13 at 7 pm Central for “Judicial threats to diversity in medical education.” Our expert faculty will discuss potential threats to affirmative action and race-based admissions to higher education, with two cases in this regard to be heard by the Supreme Court this fall.

Presenting will be Elizabeth Valencia, MD, JD, Enterprise Associate Dean of Diversity and Equity at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Minnesota, along with Joaquin Baca, MSPH, Director of Medical Education Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at the AMA. They will set the stage for your comments and questions on this key topic.

Joaquin Baca, MS
Director of Diversity of Equity, Diversity, and Belonging for Medical Education @American Medical Association
Joaquin Baca is Director of Diversity of Equity, Diversity, and Belonging for Medical Education at the American Medical Association (AMA). Prior to his work at the AMA, from 2015-2019, he served as the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) Deputy Director of the Office of Policy and Accountability and Director of the Office of Health Equity, overseeing the Office of the Tribal Liaison and Office of Border Health. He also worked at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center for 15 years, serving at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Health as Program Director, as Director of Diversity and Institutional Ethnic Research, and as Student Navigator for the Center of Native American Health. Baca earned his MS in public health with a concentration in community health and a BA in liberal arts through St. John’s College’s Great Books Program. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences at UNM.

Elizabeth Valencia, MD, JD, FCLM, serves as Enterprise Associate Dean of Diversity Equity and Inclusion for Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine for Arizona, Florida, Minnesota campuses, and she is a medical expert in Breast Cancer Imaging & Intervention at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She earned medical and law degrees from SIU School of Medicine & School of Law and serves on the Board of Governors of the American College of Legal Medicine, AMA’s Minority Affairs Section, and Wellness Equity Leadership Scholar and National Hispanic Medical Association Leadership Scholar. Dr. Valencia served as a Health Policy Dunn Fellow for the Governor of Illinois to the Departments of Health & Human Services, Public Health, Public Aid, and Child & Family Services. She was a recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, Illinois Women’s Bar Foundation Service Award, City of San Diego Delegate for U.S. Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future, and City of San Diego Volunteer of the Year Award.
