The residency application and match process: Reflecting back, thinking forward
The 2020-2021 residency application cycle was unprecedented. The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on elective clinical experiences and away rotations. A historic number of applications were submitted, and residency interviews were conducted virtually. USMLE Step exams were delayed and Step 2 CS was canceled. Given the ongoing uncertainties, NRMP added a fourth round to the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), anticipating the possibility of a large number of unfilled positions in the Match.

March 19, 2021 concludes this unusual and challenging residency application cycle and provides an opportunity to reflect and identify lessons learned in order to innovate and improve future application cycles.

Attend this American Medical Association webinar and be able to:
1. Recognize the challenges associated with the residency application process
2. Describe how medical schools and residency programs adjusted during an unprecedented cycle
3. Outline lessons learned and propose innovative approaches to improve future application cycles and increase diversity in GME
